Upper back pain can be characterized as any pain or discomfort through the backside of the chest and in the upper abdominal area.  This includes the shoulder blades and the chest region of the spine.  It is also referred to as the middle back.

Upper Back Pain Symptoms

Most people experience some degree of upper back pain throughout their life.  Upper back is not as common as lower back pain.  The reason upper back pain is not as common is because the thoracic spine does not move as much as the spine does in the lower back and neck.

When it comes to upper back pain, it can be brief or chronic, with chronic being defined as pain lasting more than 3 months.  You may feel a dull, throbbing, or sharp pain and you may be in constant pain.  Most times the pain will flare when doing a particular activity such as lifting objects or working at your desk for long periods of time.

There are numerous nerves, muscles and tendons in the upper back area.  Any one of these structures can become inflamed in response to a variety of conditions such as athritis, overuse, poor posture or bone cancer.  Most often this is simply due to muscle irritation or joint problems and is not a major reason for concern.

Why Chiropractic Care for Upper Back Pain?

Pain Relief

Chiropractic adjustments can help alleviate pain in the upper back by targeting misalignments (subluxations) in the spine. By realigning vertebrae and restoring proper function to the musculoskeletal system, chiropractors can reduce tension and pressure on nerves, providing relief from pain.

Improved Range of Motion

Upper back pain often restricts movement and flexibility, impacting daily activities and quality of life. Through chiropractic adjustments, spinal mobilization, and therapeutic exercises, chiropractors can help restore proper alignment and flexibility to the spine and surrounding muscles. This can result in improved range of motion, making it easier to perform tasks without discomfort.

Preventive Care

Regular chiropractic visits not only address existing upper back pain but also serve as preventive care to reduce the risk of future episodes. By maintaining proper spinal alignment and addressing underlying issues that contribute to pain, such as poor posture or muscle imbalances, chiropractic care can help individuals avoid recurrent upper back problems and promote overall spinal health.
