The sciatic nerve begins in your lower back and branches off in to your hips, buttocks, legs and down to your feet.  Most times you will feel this condition on 1 side only, but in rare cases it can arise in both sides which typically means there is a serious mis-alignment in your lower back.  The pain worsen while sitting, standing, walking or bending your back forward or in reverse.  Even such things as coughing, sneezing or laughing can create a painful sensation down your leg, how frustrating!

Most Common Causes of Sciatica

The causes of sciatica vary greatly from person to person.  Some experience mild pains whereas others the shooting feeling can be unbearable to move.  While some primarily feel the symptoms in their lower back, others ca certainly feel symptoms in their hamstring or feet.

These are the most common causes:

Herniated Disc:  disc material is no longer intact causing physical and chemical irritation to structures
Bulging Disc  disc material is still intact, but the disc is bulging and irritating nearby structures
Bone Spurs  extra bone is deposited naturally by your body in an attempt to stabilize your spine
Lumbar Spinal Stenosis:  spinal canal narrowing in your low back
Degenerative Disc Disease:  failure of disc material, worsens over time and is designated by different phases
Spondylolisthesis:  when a vertebra slips forward over an adjacent vertebra
Pregnancy:  your center of gravity shifts day-to-day during the different stages of pregnancy
Muscle Spasms:  muscles of your back or buttocks can spasm due to stress

When you come to Blakely Chiropractic, a thorough evaluation will be performed to see what part of the lower back or leg that you are experiencin the most pain. X-rays will almost certainly be performed as this will be the tell-tale sign of a spinal subluxation that is causing the sciatic nerve to be irritated or flare up.  After the initial adustment you will already to start to feel pain relief, and with conntinued care the sciatica condition and pain will decrease as your body re-aligns itself back to health.  Many of our patients come to Blakely Chiropractic care for sciatica.

There is no reason to live with sciatic pain when this condition can be treated fairly easily with the proper care.  It just takes a call and an appointment to get you the answers you need and your body back to optimal health!
